Baby crib

Here is a little information on how to make your own crib. perhaps one day I will add proper details, with video etc. But for now at least you can get the basic dimensions…..
Here are the basic dimensions.
The bottom is 50 cm x 80 cm
The sides are about 48 high, but remember that we folded it over (sort of made a loop) so that I could slide poles into it.
The fold over is 10 cm’s as we used quite fat poles. See the picture.
We always used an industrial cotton when we sewed – but that was only because we made more hammocks than cribs – so it was the cotton that we had in stock.
I am fairly sure that you could use any cotton.
You could almost any fabric too, as the seams are sewn all along and give a combined strength.
Now if you look at the picture you can notice a few things.
I was very conscious of sharp corners, so I never left screws un grinded or un sanded wooden ends.
I also tried to use a soft rope as your baby’s head could graze past the rope easily and if it is a bit “scratchy” then that worried me.
A cotton 12 mm rope looked the nicest – but from a strength point of view you could use almost anything ski rope etc. just do not use string.
We used a product called “masonite” which you might not have wherever you are, but it is a form of particle board or plywood.
We sanded the piece of wood’s edges smooth and it slid into a sort of pillow case that was padded on the one end. This created a 1cm mattress for the child to lie on.
It also was easily washable.
The crib is brilliant for those early months as the swaying motion gives them a secure feeling.
Once the baby gets old enough to roll over, they tend to roll into the edges of the crib and sort of get stuck, and at that stage you can either use those triangular wedge support cushions to control the rolling or re-tie the ropes that they do not go up to one point anymore, and go to 4 points.
We played with hanging the crib on a strong spring and it did work as you get a swinging bouncing motion quickly – but it seemed too bouncy for me, so I never added the spring with the sales of the cribs.
The concept of hanging up a hanging crib stems from the east (India – Pakistan) and if you have any friends that are a little traditional they can also advise you.
I looked at copying their designs – but to me it looked like the child could fall out too easily.
If you fix a hook above a spot next to your bed, and another where you relax, and even another next to your favorite coffee shop ( ha ha ) you can move the crib very easily without even waking the baby.
